Spanning the Mississippi River in the middle of the Central time zone, the St. Louis area lies within 500 miles of several Midwestern cities that collectively account for one third of the total U.S. population. These metropolitan areas include Chicago, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cincinnati and Memphis.
Accessible by four interstate highways, St. Louis is also home to the second-largest inland U.S. port by trip ton-miles. And with six Class I railroads and several smaller industrial railroads, St. Louis is the country’s third-largest rail center.
